One of the highlights of our last week was the ride in the
dune buggies. The buggies seem to be truck frames missing their bodies with
roll cages welded on. Upon first glance, they look really really fast, however,
upon looking at the rust in the engine bay and shocks, I began to think that
maybe that wasn’t such a good thing.
The group split into two buggies and I ended up in the back
of a yellow one with an old man as our driver. When we got going I realized that
these things rode pretty bad. We’d bottom out hitting a fairly medium-sized bump
going like twenty. Some ruts were so bad that I was actually starting to
worry about the fused disk in my lower back popping out. Going up the dunes
then quickly turning down at an angle was pretty fun though, even if it was at
eighteen miles an hour.
At the halfway point, we took a break to go sand boarding. I’d
never done it before, and it was pretty fun. It was really cool looking over to
see the oasis. It’s this gorgeous pond surrounded by miles and miles of desert.
Overall, it was a fun
part of the trip and I’m really glad we went, even though I’ll be cleaning sand
from those pair of pants for the next couple months.
