On Sunday we went to the Machu Picchu ruins. We had to wake
up at 5 to be the tourist rush. There is a hotel that sits next to the ruins
where tourists are able to see Machu Picchu before the park opens.
Unfortunately, we were not staying at the hotel. In the morning there was a
thick blanket of clouds covering the mountaintop so we couldn’t take any good
pictures. The weather cleared up by 10am when we finished our tour. Our tour
guide had some interesting beliefs about the town of Machu Picchu and seemed to
believe that they were a communist society. We had previously learned at other
ruins and through readings that this was not the case. There was a hierarchy in
the Inca Empire. Conquered groups were assimilated into their culture but received
a lower social status. Nonetheless, it was an incredible visit and we had enough
information to conduct self-guided tours. These ruins are definitely a must-see
for anyone traveling to Peru.
